REASONS WHY PARENTS SHOULDN’T STOP THEIR KIDS FROM USING LEFT HAND

This is a very important topic to me and a quarter of left-handed people in Nigeria, Africa and all over the world. My own experience as a left-handed lady; I was brought up in an intellectual setting but it was still insisted I write with right hand - consciously or unconsciously it must have shaped my life one way or the other. I do every other thing with left hand, except writing.

We have a story of Tobi, a Nigerian lady, who went to the market to buy foodstuffs.  As she was about to pay the old woman whom she was buying tomatoes from, the way the Mama starred at her like she was a disrespectful lady because she used her left hand to give her money - like it was an abomination or a curse. Tobi said she angrily collected the money she gave to the old woman and she said the F word to an illiterate who obviously don’t know what that means. All she heard was other market women telling her in Yoruba, "lefty ni now, Mama!"

Samuel, also a Nigerian student, was on his way for JAMB exams and when he sat down and gave the bus conductor money, the bus conductor refused to collect the money and even claimed the guy had the guts to give him money with a left hand. Then, Samuel started campaigning; ''So because I'm a left-handed now ..I'm rude?" And everyone in the bus started supporting him.

These drama happens all the time to left-handed people, especially in Nigeria where some set of the population are so into the traditions of our forefathers. So, they term anything  different as evil - What ignorance! I see being a left-handed lady has made me a Designer and a Trained Presenter. Most times we often complain about the frustration  of being left-handed in a Third World country. At the same time, there are a lot of advantages of being left-handed in this generation, and times when everything looks the same, being left-handed makes you stand out.

With survey and statistics, we are about 10 percent that are left-handed in the world population. Lefties are a serious minority while we have endured a serious amount of prejudice, the word for left in almost every language in this world has a less than positive connotation and aggressiveness towards us over the years.

Today, we left-handed individuals are so proud of the fact that we are different, and we would fight any oppositions against us. We have to survive in a world that is made for right-handed people. So, any time any human being criticize you for being left-handed, tell them they just can’t be like you- unique, different, creative extraordinary. Been left-handed is a blessing I marvel at and our Nigerian celebrities are not left out. Among the Nigerian celebrities who are left-handed, we have Funke Akindele, Okechukwu Ukeje, Segun Arinze, Desmond Elliot, Adesua Etomi, Ejoifor and our Honorable, former Governor of Lagos State and presently the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola. These great Nigerians are  all left-handed people. So, you see we are one of a kind and the greatest to come out of history.
